Although I have studied many different styles of music, I have always had an affinity for Classic Rock in my early years, and Flamenco in my later ones. I started as a child pounding out familiar melodies on a piano. I formally started playing electric guitar in high school. I switched from electric guitar to steel string acoustic guitar. I finally to nylon string guitar after I graduated from college.
Within these genres, I have found a vehicle to express countless ideas and a plethora of emotions. For me, Flamenco speaks to a larger audience than any other style of music I have ever crafted. It somehow manages to transcend all ages, cultures, and classes, without the need for the listener to develop an ‘acquired taste’.
My style is based in Flamenco, and has hints of Western European Classical, Celtic, South American, Cuban, Mexican, and Middle Eastern influences. In addition to my many eclectic tastes, I am also a master improviser and a virtuoso guitarist. My performances are articulate and sensitive.
“To hear Mr. Spungin perform is a real treat, as the music is a perfect balance between the head and the heart, combining the spontaneity of jazz, the technique of classical, the melodies of international folk, and the rhythms of dance.”
During a performance, I have the freedom to explore and experiment, while at the same time the listener can enjoy my music on many different levels, ranging from unique and masterful techniques, expressive and passionate tones, a variety of rhythms, and simple yet intriguing ideas. Creating Flamenco music follows a simple process, with musical traditions rooted in ancient Gypsy culture. Each individual piece is always based in song, is usually based in dance, and as a whole, the standard Flamenco repertory offers a mood for any occasion.
The guitar works well in situations where music is not a distraction from casual conversation. By its very nature, the guitar does not sustain, and the frequency of its notes falls just below the voice and therefore does not interfere with the spoken word. For many years before I became a father, I traveled throughout the United States, performing in small venues and at hundreds of wedding ceremonies, cocktail hours, and corporate events.
When the situation calls for it, I am always willing to sing some of the music I grew up listening to, including selections by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bob Marley, and the Beatles. I often try to bring the flavor of Flamenco into the mix.
Besides playing the nylon string guitar, I regularly compose on the bass guitar and piano. My piano style has been influenced by my Flamenco guitar studies and has adopted a palmas quality.
